Can Individual Broken Roof Tiles Be Repaired?
Often, a cracked or slipped roof tile can be repaired in place without removal. Using a compatible roofing adhesive can stabilize cracks or secure displaced tiles. When done properly, this method restores the tile and minimizes disruption to the surrounding roof.
Replacement is required when a tile is crushed, shattered, or otherwise beyond repair. In these cases, the damaged tile must be removed and replaced with a compatible one to ensure proper coverage.
Removing a repairable tile is not always advisable. Roof tiles may be attached with nails, screws, clips, mortar, foam adhesive, or combinations of these. Removing one tile can damage fasteners, disrupt the original attachment, or stress adjacent tiles. Lifting surrounding tiles to access the damaged one may also increase the risk of further cracking.
Repairing a cracked tile in place often better preserves the roof’s integrity than unnecessary removal. Use an adhesive suitable for the tile and roofing system, and ensure repairs do not block drainage or interfere with tile overlap.
Before deciding whether to repair or replace a tile, a roofing professional should evaluate:
Whether the tile is cracked, slipped, crushed, or shattered
Whether the tile remains properly positioned
The condition of the surrounding tiles
The original fastening or attachment method
Whether the underlayment or flashing beneath the tile has been damaged
Whether a compatible replacement tile is available if replacement is necessary
A cracked tile does not always require replacement, and unnecessary replacement can cause more disruption than the original issue. We recommend repairing cracked or slipped tiles when possible and reserving replacement for tiles that are crushed or beyond repair.
The goal should always be to correct the problem while disturbing as little of the existing roofing system as possible.
