How to Verify a Florida Roofing Contractor’s License
Before hiring a contractor to repair or replace your roof, confirm they are properly licensed in Florida. A license number on a truck, advertisement, or proposal is only a starting point and should always be independently verified.
Use Florida’s Official License Search
Visit MyFloridaLicense.com and select “Verify a License.” Search by the contractor’s license number, individual name, or business name. The Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) provides this service at no charge.
When reviewing the results, confirm that:
The license status is current and active.
The license holder’s name matches the individual associated with the company.
The correct business name appears on the license record.
The license authorizes the type of roofing work being proposed.
The contractor’s identifying information is consistent with the proposal and other company materials.
Florida construction businesses must be qualified by a properly licensed individual. Homeowners should verify both the individual contractor and the business entity offering the roofing contract.
Understand the Type of License
A Certified Roofing Contractor may work anywhere in Florida. A Registered Roofing Contractor is limited to the cities or counties where they hold the required local competency credentials.
Do not assume a general business license, occupational license, or corporate registration authorizes a company to perform roofing work. These are not substitutes for a contractor’s license.
Check Insurance and Local Requirements
Licensing is only part of the verification process. Request current proof of general liability and workers’ compensation insurance from the contractor. When possible, confirm coverage with the insurance agent or carrier listed on the certificate.
Homeowners should contact their local building department to confirm permitting requirements and whether the contractor is eligible to obtain permits in that jurisdiction. The roofing permit must be issued under the properly licensed contractor responsible for the project.
