What to Do if a Storm-Chasing Roofer Knocks on Your Door
After a hurricane or severe storm, roofing contractors often visit affected communities seeking work. While a door-to-door visit does not mean a contractor is dishonest, homeowners should not feel pressured to authorize an inspection, sign an agreement, or provide insurance information immediately.
Request the company’s full name, business address, telephone number, and Florida contractor license number. Do not rely only on a business card, vehicle lettering, or a license number on promotional material. Independently verify the contractor through the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation’s online license search. Ensure the license is active and the name matches the information provided.
Request proof of general liability and workers’ compensation insurance or an applicable exemption. Consider researching how long the company has operated locally, reviewing its complaint history, and requesting references from recent customers. Contractors who arrive after a storm may be difficult to locate later if repairs fail or warranty service is needed.
Do not sign a contract during the initial conversation. Request a written, itemized proposal detailing the work, materials, price, payment schedule, warranties, permitting responsibilities, and estimated timeline. Compare it with proposals from other licensed contractors. Review every page, including documents presented as permission to inspect the roof.
Be cautious if someone claims your roof needs replacement without a proper evaluation, promises full insurance coverage, offers to eliminate your deductible, demands a large immediate payment, or pressures you to sign before a stated deadline. Do not allow anyone to contact your insurer or act on your behalf unless you fully understand and intentionally authorize it.
If emergency protection is needed, document the damage first when it is safe to do so. Clarify whether the proposed work is temporary or permanent.
A reputable contractor will provide credentials, explain their findings, and allow you time to make an informed decision. Packard Roofing & Waterproofing, Inc. has served Florida homeowners for over 55 years and helps Treasure Coast property owners evaluate storm damage without high-pressure sales tactics.
