Why Contractor Insurance Matters

Roofing work requires ladders, heavy materials, and power tools, with workers operating at heights. Despite proper safety procedures, accidents and property damage may still occur. Contractor insurance protects the roofing company, its employees, and the homeowner if issues arise.

General Liability Insurance

General liability insurance covers bodily injury or property damage caused by a contractor’s operations, subject to policy terms and limits. For example, it may apply if roofing debris damages a vehicle or if an accident affects part of the home.

Florida’s active construction licensees must maintain minimum levels of public liability and property-damage insurance established by the Construction Industry Licensing Board.

Workers’ Compensation Insurance

Workers’ compensation provides medical and wage benefits if an employee is injured at work. In Florida, construction employers with one or more employees must carry this coverage, though eligible owners or officers may seek an exemption. Contractors must also verify that subcontractors have the required coverage or valid exemptions before work begins.

Without proper coverage, injury or property-damage claims can lead to disputes, project delays, or efforts to recover costs from other parties.

Ask for Proof—and Verify It

Before signing a roofing contract, request a current certificate of insurance and review it to confirm the following:

  • The insured business name matches the company on your contract.

  • General liability and workers’ compensation coverage are identified.

  • The policy dates extend through the expected project period.

  • The insurance carrier and agent are clearly listed.

Since a certificate only shows coverage at the time of issue, homeowners should contact the listed insurance agent or carrier to confirm the policies are still active.

A contractor’s license and insurance serve different purposes, so homeowners should verify both. Packard Roofing & Waterproofing maintains all required licensing and insurance for our operations and will provide documentation before work begins. This transparency ensures homeowners understand project responsibilities and available protections.
